Everyone loves a good “National ‘pick your own’ Day” including us here at myalbanianfood. It’s become a popular trend and a great way to get something everyone loves the appreciation it deserves.
Did you know that Burek goes as far back as the Ottoman Era and was a popular part of the Ottoman Empire cuisine, and that in 2012 The Guardian ranked Burek as one of the top 10 best street foods in the world? It is the biggest Balkan Street Food and spreads as far as the Mediterranean and eastern Europe – although some say that it originates from what we now know to be Turkey.
For us, that makes this food something worth celebrating!
National Burek Day (#nationalburekday) will be on the 31st August every year.
Why? Good question.
- Burek was chosen over the other Byrek and Börek pronunciations as there is already a Burek Day Festival. We think that ties in nicely.
- There is a Burek Day Festival “Buregdžijada” where the making, baking and eating of Burek is celebrated. This falls late August / early September every year. 31st August, that’s in the middle.
- There is no set time of year that Burek is eaten, in some countries it is eaten to break fasting, in others to celebrate the new year (with hidden pennies inside) however, In Albania and surrounding countries during the summer months Byrek is one of the biggest selling foods at the beaches, especially for lunch time snacking. The date being in the summer made a good choice.
- June through to September the Balkans see their height in tourist visitors, a great time to get more people to try and fall in love with this food!
- August, it’s just a great time of year don’t you think?
